Jesus’ public ministry began with his baptism by John and confrontation with Satan in the wilderness. Unlike our own experience, his baptism could not deliver anything to Jesus that he did not already have. His baptism was for us. Jesus chose to be baptised in obedience to the Father’s command (Matthew 3:15). Humility. “In your relationships with one another, have the same mindset as Christ Jesus: Who being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage; rather, he made himself nothing be taking the very nature of a servant…” (Philippians2:5-7).
Perhaps we pay too much attention to getting our relationship right with God. More often than not, we need to revisit our own starting point – complete submission to the will of God. “A humble person is not one who thinks little of himself, hangs his head and says, ‘I am nothing’. Rather, he is one who depends wholly on the Lord for everything, in every circumstance (David Wilkerson).
I leave you with a final quotation from A.W.Tozer. “For the Christian, humility is absolutely indispensable. Without it there can be no self-knowledge, no repentance, no faith and no salvation.
Realise your dependence upon God. Submit to whatever God is doing in your life right now. Every blessing as you take that step.
